History

Crumlin Road Gaol, situated in Belfast, Northern Ireland, boasts a rich and turbulent history that mirrors the region’s socio-political changes. Opened in 1846, the gaol was designed by the acclaimed architect Sir Charles Lanyon and functioned as a prison for more than 150 years. It was built to cater to the increasing number of inmates.

Showcasing a distinct Victorian Gothic style along with a unique radial design that permitted effective monitoring of prisoners. Over the years, the gaol housed infamous criminals, political detainees, and participants in the troubles, including members of paramilitary groups such as the IRA.

Not only notable for its architectural significance, the prison is remembered for the pivotal events that occurred within its walls. It was the site of numerous executions, including those of political figures, and acted as a holding facility during some of Northern Ireland’s most challenging periods. After its closure in 1996, redevelopment plans took shape, and today, Crumlin Road Gaol has transformed into a popular tourist destination. It now operates as a museum, providing guided tours that educate visitors about its storied past, the impact of the Troubles, and the overall history of conflict and peace in Northern Ireland.

The Project

Our company was entrusted with the complete design, supply, and installation of the stonemasonry package. This involved steam cleaning to reveal the stonework’s original beauty, followed by the raking out of existing mortar and repointing with lime mortar. To maintain historical authenticity, we selected new sandstone, which was expertly designed, supplied, and installed using traditional stonemasonry techniques, with careful attention to detail.
