Restoration of the North West Multimodal Transport Hub: A Testament to Heritage and Future Mobility
Cunningham Stone Limited is proud to have played a key role in the restoration of the North West Multimodal Transport Hub. This important project officially opened on March 1, 2023, and was funded by the EU’s INTERREG VA Programme. It represents a significant investment in public transport infrastructure, promoting sustainable and cross-border connectivity in the North West.
As restoration specialists, we undertook a wide range of tasks to ensure the Hub retained its historical charm while being modernised for current use. Our skilled team used steam cleaning and grit cleaning methods to rejuvenate original surfaces. This process removed years of dirt and grime while preserving the materials’ natural beauty.
Additionally, our expertise in brick repair was vital to this project. We carefully raked out and repointed the joints with traditional lime mortar. This ensured the masonry’s structural integrity and aesthetic appeal were both preserved. Another key aspect of the restoration was the design, supply, and fitting of sandstone masonry, primarily made from Peak Moor Sandstone. This unique material enhances the Hub’s architectural elegance and highlights the region’s rich geological heritage. Our craftsmen skilfully carved intricate details that reflect the building’s historical significance, seamlessly blending functionality with artistic expression.
The results of our restoration efforts are evident in the stunning transformation of the North West Multimodal Transport Hub. This facility is more than just a transport interchange; it shows a commitment to improving public transport infrastructure and promoting active travel. Local officials emphasised during the unveiling ceremony that it serves as an essential hub for cyclists and public transport users. This marks a significant shift toward greener travel options.
Restoring this important civic structure revitalises the community, encourages sustainable practices, and preserves architectural heritage for future generations. At Cunningham Stone Limited, we are proud to have contributed to this remarkable project, reaffirming our dedication to quality, heritage, and innovation in every restoration effort.
We look forward to more projects that combine restoration with sustainability. Our goal is to continue serving our communities while ensuring a greener environment for everyone.
